DOWN TO EARTH / DOMES OF HEAVEN 1990-91

Materials: mixed media, ink, gouache, glue, and earth on paper, 30 x 22 inches each

This series shows the intersection of two realms: heaven and earth.  Elements from each realm exist in the other, contradicting a clean dichotomy.  Wheels were seen in Ezekiel's vision of the chariot and are interpreted as the carriers of a divine throne  The wheels in these works are ambiguous and more secular, rolling in the muck or supporting the firmament, Earth from my own back yard grounds the wheels. Desiccated, the openings they offer await transformation from the droplets above—from earthly or heavenly bodies: tears, milk, or rain.  A sinuous, knotted tubing may arise in liberation or collapse into a chaotic claustrophobia.

These images were created during and after my pregnancy and can also be seen as precarious wombs with all the elements of fertilization, reproduction and care of newborns.
